Irish Open pro hits into water. Then disastrously does it again, again and again

Shane Lowry warned us. The K Club, despite yielding low scores over the first two days of this week’s Irish Open, wasn’t without fangs, he said.

“You miss fairways, there’s a lot of tricky shots and there’s a lot of trouble, a lot of water,” the 2019 Open Championship winner said Friday after his second round.

“You need to be very clever and be very careful.”

You probably know where this is going. No, this is not a story saying Lowry was wrong.

Earlier in the week, Santiago Tarrio had been looking forward to the Open. On the website formerly known as Twitter, he noted that this was “one of the best weeks of the year,” while posting two videos and a photo during a practice round. On Thursday, the 32-year-old from Spain shot a two-under 70. On Friday, he shot a 72 and made the cut.

On Saturday, he was even-par through four holes.

You may know where this is headed.

We’ll go in order. Hold on.

On the 445-yard, par-4 5th, Tarrio bogeyed, after coming up short of the green with his second shot. On the 486-yard, par-4 6th, he bogeyed again, after again coming up short of the green with his second shot. On the 434-yard, par-4 7th, he double-bogeyed, after hitting into water on his second shot. On the 160-yard, par-3 8th, Tarrio parred.

It gets uglier.

On the 452-yard, par-4 9th, he double-bogeyed, after three-putting from 1 foot, 6 inches away. On the 581-yard, par-5 10th, he parred, and on the 433-yard, par-4 11th, he birdied. Tarrio did make two of those on Saturday.

On the 159-yard, par-3 12th, he triple-bogeyed, after hitting his tee shot into water and three-putting. He then parred 13, 14 and 15. He was eight-over at that point.

Then he was 15-over after 16.

We’ll go in order. Hold on.

On the 556-yard, par-5 16th, Tarrio hit the fairway with his tee shot, and he was 237 out with his second shot. He hit that one into the water. From about 125 yards out, he dropped.

He hit that one into the water right of the green. From about 125 yards out, he dropped.

He hit that one into the water right of the green. From about 125 yards out, he dropped.

He hit that one into the water right of the green. From about 125 yards out, he dropped.

Stroke 10 found land, though barely — his ball settled right of the green and just left of the water. From there, he hit on, and he cleaned up. For his septuple-bogey 12. Tarrio then double-bogeyed the 422-yard, par-4 17th, after hitting four shots from 14 yards away, and he parred the 548-yard, par-5 18th.

And he was done. He signed for a 17-over 89. He had hit into the water six times. He carded two birdies and eight pars. Along with three bogeys, three double-bogeys, one triple bogey and one septuple-bogey.

We’ll end things here on a good note.

Tarrio will still cash. He had made the cut, after all.
