Presidents Cup Thursday foursomes matches

All times ET / Refresh for updates

Match 1, 1:05 p.m. — Patrick Cantlay/Xander Schauffele def. Adam Scott/Hideki Matsuyama 6 and 5

4:05 p.m.: Americans get the first point on the board! Cantlay’s tee shot was bound for the water but finds a TV tower and the pair gets up-and-down for par while the international’s make birdie. Schauffele makes an 8-footer for the clincher.

International captain Trevor Immelman’s move to put his two stars out first backfires as they run into the freight train paring of Cantlay and Schauffele. Scott and Matsuyama bogey the final three holes of the match.

The American duo is now 5-2-0 in Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup matches together.

3:45 p.m.: The Par-5 is won with a par by the Americans after the Internationals take four to get it in the hole from pin high left in two.

3:35 p.m.: Water ball off the tee from Scott leads to another American win. Cantlay and Schauffele are out to dominating lead over the International’s two biggest stars.

3:14 p.m.: Matsuyama hit a dart but Adam Scott can’t get the birdie putt to fall on the par-3.

3:04 p.m.: Both teams make birdie to end the front nine. Schauffele and Cantlay have birdied four out of the last five holes. Cantlay is also mashing the ball. His last three tee balls have gone 332 yard, 360 and the one at the ninth was 336.

2:52 p.m.: Matsuyama gets the International’s first birdie of the round after he makes a 9-footer on the short par-4 8th. Schauffele is unable to match from just inside that distance.

2:38: p.m. Americans play the short par-5 7th the easy way after a huge drive from Cantlay leaves Schauffele a ¡¡¡¡9 iron!!!! for a second shot. Two-putt birdie putt good for the win after Matsuyama’s second shot hits a tree.

2:22 p.m.: Schauffele hits a great approach on the monster par-3 6th. Gives Cantlay a 13-footer from 253 yards and Cantlay drains it for the pairs third win in six holes.

2:12 p.m.: Schauffele hits an approach to nine feet and Cantlay drains to extend the American lead to 2 Up.

1:46 p.m.: Adam Scott burns the edge on his long birdie putt on 3 and left Hideki Matsuyama too much for the par putt. It’s a bogey for the Internationals, surrendering the first hole of the event.

1:33 p.m.: Both sides make comfy pars and move on to the 3rd hole. A bit nervy start for the lead match. Pars, pars, pars.

1:29 p.m.: From the 2nd fairway, Patrick Cantlay finds the green but leaves 25 feet for birdie. Adam Scott’s approach was left short of the green. Neither team really throwing haymakers to this point.

1:21 p.m.: It’s all tied thru 1 as both teams make par. Matsuyama buries his from five feet, and so does Schauffele.

1:16 p.m.: Cantlay blasts out of the bunker and the Americans have about four feet to save par. Adam Scott follows with not the best effort from long range and they also have about five feet for par.

1:05 p.m.: Match 1 is off and running! Cantlay finds the fairway but Xander dumps the approach into the greenside bunker. Meanwhile Adam Scott drives it into the bunker but Matsuyama knocks it on the green from there.

Match 2, 1:17 p.m. — Jordan Spieth/Justin Thomas def. Sungjae Im/Corey Conners 2 and 1

5:17 p.m.: 2-0 Americans. Spieth and Thomas make a tough 4 out of the fairway bunker thanks to a nice chip from Spieth for a gimmie. Sungjae Im is unable to convert his birdie try, giving the American’s the second point of the day, more than an hour after the first.

5:04 p.m.: This match is on to the 17th after Thomas hits another squirrelly shot out of the bunker, leading to a 5 on the par-5. Meanwhile the Internationals are also unable to get it up-and-down from the green side bunker in two.

4:47 p.m.: JUSTIN THOMAS FROM DEEP! Spieth’s tee shot on the dangerous Par-4 15th (the traditional 18th) nearly finds the water, but nestles in a horrible lie. Thomas is able to hack it out over the creek and onto the back edge of the green. Spieth nearly hits the first putt off the green, but Thomas bails out his partner with the par make from 27 feet. Conners par try is no good from 11 feet and the Americans are 2 up with 3 to play.

4:30 p.m.: No blood on the 14th hole as both teams have makable birdie tries like by. They’ve tied the first five holes to start the back nine in this match.

3:42 p.m.: Spieth goes for the green on the short par-4 but finds the water. Internationals lay-up but still find the water on their second shot. Conners ends up making an 8 footer to split the hole with bogey.

3:17 p.m.: Im and Conners starting to heat up. Im makes a 14-footer after Spieth’s birdie try comes up just low. The internationals are 4-under for the last three holes as we head to back nine.

3:04 p.m.: Two birdies mean a tie on the short par-4. Internationals starting to see some more putts go in.

2:45 p.m.: Conners hits a wonderful second shot on the par-5 7th while Thomas’s approach just barely clears the water and gets cut up in the rough short of the green. Spieth’s chip can’t get inside the International’s and their eagle is conceded when Thomas’s birdie slips low. Internationals haven’t made a birdie in any match yet, but Im and Conners have an eagle on the card.

2:31 p.m.: Conners blows it long on the long par-3 6th and the Internationals drop their third straight hole with a bogey.

2:20 p.m.: Thomas makes up for a terrible tee shot on the par-3 4th with a beautiful approach from the fairway bunker on 5. Spieth makes the 8-footer to extend the lead to 2 up.

2 p.m.: Thomas rolls in a par putt on 3, and that’s good enough to win the hole. They go 1 up.

1:49 p.m.: Thomas’ birdie try burns the edge on 2 and it’s a couple pars for another tie.

1:42 p.m. Sometimes playing from the pine needles is a great thing. Spieth plays from this lie to about 8 feet. Advantage USA.

jordan spieth

1:35 p.m.: We have our first bad shot of the event. Justin Thomas overcooks his draw on the 2nd and finds the trees. Good thing Spieth has some experience playing from there.

1:30 p.m.: Justin Thomas makes an 8-footer for par to tie the hole and move on. No blood, no foul.

1:26 p.m.: Nothing simple about that 1st hole if you fail to find the short grass. Thomas lays up short right of the green. Conners finds the putting surface, giving Im a good chance to take an early lead.

1:20 p.m.: Spieth misses the fairway left but is just fine for Thomas to approach from. Sunjae Im finds the fairway for Conners. They’re two of the best players the International team can boast, so keep your eyes on this match.

Match 3, 1:29 p.m. — Cam Young/Collin Morikawa def. vs. Tom Kim/K.H. Lee 2 and 1

5:31 p.m.: Cam Young with the dagger from 26 feet for birdie to clinch the Americans’ third point of the day! The U.S. clinches an opening session win for the seventh time in the last eight Presidents Cups.

5:20 p.m.: Tom Kim makes a nice 8-foot par save after he dumped the pair’s third shot into the bunker on the par-5. The make got a little fist pump out of the spunky 20-year-old.

5:00 p.m.: Two sets of pars through the rest of the “Green Mile.” Americans 1 up with three to play.

4:31 p.m.: Collin did Collin things. After a monster drive on the first hole of the “Green Mile” from Young, Morikawa from just 144 yards on the 497-yard par-4 hits it to 2 and a half feet. Conceded birdies and the Americans steal the momentum back.

4:15 p.m.: Morikawa and Young drop two in a row as Kim and Lee make birdie the old fashioned way on the par-5 12th. Young misses a birdie try from inside Lee’s.

4:01 p.m.: Americans muck up the short par-4 11th again and lose the hole when Kim and Lee get up-and-down from long left of the green.

3:39 p.m.: Morikawa flags another one to 6 and half feet but Cam Young is unable to convert the birdie look.

3:31 p.m.: Americans take a 2-up lead after Kim and Lee three-putt from the fringe on 9.

2:58 p.m. Both teams hit the green in two at the par-5 and two-putt.

2:42 p.m.: Cam Young getting to hit Collin Morikawa’s approach shots might not be fair. Young makes the American’s second birdie on the long par-3 to grab the lead.

2:17 p.m.: Found the dart. Morikawa stuffs an approach at the 3rd to inside 10 feet and Young converts the birdie to tie the match.

1:38 p.m.: Despite the juicy lie and shorter approach, both sides will have about the same distance — 20 feet or so — for their birdie tries on 1. Still looking for our first dart. Both teams eventually two-putt for pars.

1:30 p.m.: Cameron Young finally sends some LIFE into the 1st hole, cutting the corner up over the trees and into the fairway. Morikawa will have a short approach in. K.H. Lee finds the fairway but Tom Kim will have a much longer approach.

Match 4, 1:41 p.m. — Si Woo Kim/Cam Davis def. Scottie Scheffler/Sam Burns 2 Up

5:56 p.m.: Internationals are on the board! Scheffler’s second bounces off a tree and back into the fairway after a pulled tee shot from Burns. The pair is unable to get up-and-down from the fairway and give the Internationals a short par putt for the win. The Davis and Kim used a bogey-free, three under back nine to come back from 3 down through seven holes.

5:41 p.m. The Internationals take the lead in this one. Davis flags it from inside 140 yards to within four feet. They clinch at least a half point out of this match. It’s just the second hole the Internationals have led after in any match this afternoon.

5:27 p.m.: Si Woo Kim gets a HUGE birdie putt to drop for the Internationals. The tie the match with Scheffler and Burns after the first birdie on the par-5 16th all day. The final two matches are both now tied.

5:10 p.m.: Scheffler and Burns give Kim and Davis a gift after three-putting from 7 feet for double bogey. The Internationals’ easy par cuts their deficit in half.

4:52 p.m.: Energy definitely starting to pick up. Scheffler hits a poor chip on the par-3 but Burns is able to convert the par save from 22 feet. Internationals are unable to convert their birdie try from 26 feet, just off the green. Big tie for the Americans.

4:42 p.m.: Scheffler rolls in another birdie putt to start the “Green Mile” and regain the 2-Up lead.

4:27 p.m.: Mood is starting to change in these remaining matches. Kim puts in on the par-5 green in two and the International pair makes an easy two-putt par for the win.

3:51 p.m.: Scheffler and Burns looked to be extending their lead to 3 up at the 10th, but Davis drills a 13-footer for par after Kim played a poor chip from the back left first cut.

3:26 p.m.: Davis redeems himself by driving the 321-yard par-4 with a 3-wood. Internationals two-putt while the Americans fail to get up-and-down from hole-high left.

3:15 p.m.: SPLASH! Cam Davis’ approach on the par-5 gives us our first water ball of the day. Internationals do well to make par, but Scheffler and Burns make an easy two-putt birdie.

2:57 p.m.: American are absolutely dominating the sixth hole. Four wins in four tries. Scheffler and Burns get up and down while Kim and Davis do not.

2:26 p.m.: Scheffler gets the lead right back with a 13-foot make for birdie once again. Good last few minutes for Team USA as they lead in four of the five matches.

2:14 p.m.: Mistake from the Texas twosome as Scheffler isn’t able to recover from a poor tee shot from Burns. Burns then misses the green for the third leading to a bogey and a win for the Internationals.

1:59 p.m.: Scheffler had a huge Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits and now he’s picking up where he left off, rolling in a birdie on the 1st hole to give the U.S. an early 1-up lead.

1:45 p.m.: Si Woo Kim finds the fairway on 1 and Scottie Scheffler turns his shot over and into the crowd left. Advantage INT team.

Match 5, 1:53 p.m. — Tony Finau/Max Homa def. Taylor Pendrith/Mito Pereira 1 Up

6:09 p.m.: Final point goes to the USA! Finau and Homa win their first hole since the sixth after Taylor Pendrith’s 10-foot par try doesn’t go. U.S. will take a 4-1 lead into Friday.

That will be all for this blogger! Goodnight everybody!

5:51 p.m.: This match heads to the last tied. Both teams hit solid shots to about 25-30 feet from the left rough and both end up with pars.

5:35 p.m.: Max Homa’s short game is evidently clicking. From the left greenside bunker, Homa nearly holes his third shot, nestling a foot a away for a conceded birdie. Internationals answer however, answer with Pendrith making a 24-footer to tie the hole.

5:20 p.m.: The Americans get a fantastic break after Max Homa’s approach shot nearly finds the creek left of the green, but it ricochets off a stone and allows Finau to pitch onto the green. Homa drilled the par save from 8 feet.

4:56 p.m.: Internationals take another red flag off the board thanks to Mito Pereira staring down the flag from 138 yards. His 2 foot birdie putt is conceded and this match is tied (I want to say all square so bad!).

4:35 p.m.: Par-5 12th is tied with pars.

4:20 p.m.: Third straight tie in this match (which isn’t getting too much TV coverage) after both teams go for the green, but settle for pars.

3:38 p.m.: Internationals make an easy two-putt birdie from the fringe while Homa’s birdie putt catches lip but doesn’t fall at the 8th.

3:12 p.m.: Pereira’s par putt on the par-3 slides by the hole. It’s the pairs fourth bogey of the first six holes, meanwhile the Americans won the sixth hole in every match today.

2:49 p.m.: The red goes right back up after Pendrith and Pereira struggle around the green on the par-3 4th. Finau lags up the birdie try for the win and Americans lead in every match right now.

2:40 p.m.: Internationals get some of the red off the board, squaring the match after the Americans have to pitch out from the tee shot.

2:24 p.m.: Both of these teams bogeyed the first hole. Finau flagged his approach on 2 to within five feet while the International duo makes another birdie. Americans take the lead here.

1:53 p.m.: And the final match is now on the course. Pendrith and Finau both find the fairway. And we’re off.
